Our giovedí scuola program started in Academic Year 2015/2016. It was thanks to the request of parents and students who wanted to continue in our Scuola and Scuola Program.
Scuola di Giovedí is for students in Grades 1-6 who are independent writers and becoming more independent readers interested in continuing to learn the Italian language and more in depth Italian culture, geography and history.
The overarching content is Italian Geography. From this point, we focus on a specific theme. We have studied "L'Ora" (Time and the Invention of Timepieces), Le Regioni, Michelangelo e DaVinci, Notable Italians, and this year, we are studying Italy's Peninsula (the Environment, Topography, and Agriculture).
The projects the students create help them learn and use their Italian language in authentic ways (via written, oral, drawing and/or music) to communicate what they have learned and wanted to learn. This is done by providing the students the freedom to research and decide what they want to know about the theme of the year.
In order to share with our families what we have done all year and to provide the opportunity for our students to use their Italian to present what they have researched, we have a special "festa" with our families whereby our students plan the activities (a Scavenger Hunt for parents or cooking a regional food for all to taste and about which to learn) so everyone is involved and learning. In 2021, our students created a video that was presented to our Scuola during our Zoom Festa and can be viewed here.
Ultimately, our goal for our students is that they continue to enjoy learning and using the Italian language and in so doing, keep being curious and wanting to learn more about our fascinating and beautiful country.
